The Horror Dolls dance troupe is the Central Valley’s first and only horror-themed theatrical dance troupe. Kaci, Katie and Saida pay tribute to the genre of horror by performing their choreographed routines that incorporate makeup, prosthetics and gory props.

Katie Oros who creates the choreography, costumes, props and performs with the troupe has been dancing for years and explains the best part about being a Horror Doll is the performance dance! Bringing her ideas to life by the creation of costumes is another part Katie really enjoys.

The Horror Dolls combine lovely ladies, scary monsters, blood, guts, dance and theatrics. Come check the girls out on All Hallows Eve at The Haunted Cellar. Along with the Horror Dolls, The Central Valley Horror Club will be screening locally-made horror movies filmed and produced right here in the Central Valley with local actors!

The Central Valley Horror Club was created to unite fans of horror films, their creators and the production that goes into the films. As Kaci Hansen explains, “We also wanted to unite local artists and aspiring filmmakers. A group of friends often get together and hang out to watch films and discuss movie facts and trivia. Over time, more and more people became interested in attending our movie nights. So the idea of forming a club and having our events at a public place was born.”
Kaci and others share a passion for the nostalgic quality and classic feel of the films. Inspired by “horror” shows such as The Munsters and The Addams Family, Kaci became fascinated that movie makers could obscure that line between fantasy and reality. It was what also peaked her interest in special effects and makeup artistry.

One such local creation is that of Jerry Smith. The film is called “The Side of the Road”. It was filmed in Visalia, as well as the outskirts of Pixley, Tipton and Springville. The actors were all from Visalia, Tulare, Tipton and Exeter. “Horror films can be an escape, something to jump into and lose yourself in, with the knowledge that everything will be fine,” explains Jerry. There will also be a second locally produced film directed by Derek Hill called : Operation Fear
Adding some music to the festive night, The Haunted Cellar will feature the globally famous all-female rock trio know as Shonen Knife. Over the course of their 27-year career the girls have earned a solid world-wide cult following while repeatedly touring with Nirvana and Sonic Youth. The band has been credited with making “the international pop underground more international” by opening it up to bands from Japan. Their sound is heavily influenced by 1960’s girls groups, pop bands, the Beach Boys, and early punk rock acts, such as the Ramones. The trio crafts stripped-down songs expressing infectious melodies and simplistic, exuberant lyrics sung both in Japanese and English.

’Tis the season when vampires, zombies and monsters come out to play, but 24-year-old Kaci Hansen doesn’t need Halloween for an excuse to dress up.

Hansen and other members of the Central Valley Horror Club dress up year-round for events that have included a Zombie Ball and Vampire Ball in the past, and a Monster Mash Saturday.

“We just like to dress up and have fun,” said Hansen, who plans to attend as Elvira.

The event is open to all ages and is free to attend, and though costumes are not mandatory, those who dress up can win prizes.

“We really pay attention to how people apply their makeup and how their costumes are crafted,” Hansen said. “If they make their costumes themselves or craft their costume on their own, that really makes a difference.”

The Visalia resident founded the club in 2008, when a group of her friends would gather to watch horror flicks and bond over their passion for the genre’s gore, makeup and costumes.

“At first I was into the really, really cheesy movies that would make you laugh more than scare you,” Hansen said. “But I just started getting into other sub-genres; I really like the creativity that goes into a lot of them.”

The club is still fairly informal and doesn’t have official members or require dues, but through the use of social networking sites, it has grown to include hundreds of followers.

Hansen hosted the club’s first all-ages movie night in January and screened “Day of the Dead” at Visalia’s All Pro Pizza.

“One goal of the club is to expose people to movies they haven’t seen,” she said.

Since then they’ve held several more movie nights at the pizza restaurant, where its owner Eric Williams, allows it because it boosts his business.

More than 200 people attended the club’s Zombie Ball in August at the venue.

“We had no idea how that was going to turn out,” Hansen said. “But to have that many people get into zombie costume in August, is a pretty big deal.”

The event was used as a trial run for the club’s Vampire Ball that happened Oct. 23 and the Monster Mash that starts at 7:30 Saturday.

Hansen works as a graphic and Web designer for a Visalia advertising agency, and is a student at College of the Sequoias. Planning and organizing the club’s events hasn’t been easy to fit into her already-busy schedule, but her love for horror keeps her motivated.

“It’s fun to unite people with similar interests who appreciate the special effects and the production and everything that goes into making horror films,” she said.

Bring out your capes and fangs, because Visalia’s first Vampire Ball is debuting Saturday at All Pro Pizza

This is the Central Valley Horror Club’s second horror-themed ball. The group’s first even was an August bash featuring zombies.

Kaci Hansen, the club’s organizer, said that more people turned out for that event than the club organizers expected.

“We weren’t really sure how people would react to dressing up in August when it wasn’t Halloween,” Hansen said. “We don’t really like using Halloween as the only excuse to dress up. We like to find any excuse to get into character.”

Those who do come in costume pay $3 to enter the ball. Admission for noncostumed attendees is $5. Two live bands will play: GATJA, a metal/rock band, and The Chamberlains, who play new-wave goth rock that Hansen said is reminiscent of The Cure or Depeche Mode.

DJ AR and DJ Malice will pump out industrial and dark wave music for the rest of the evening, “to go with the vampire thing,” Hansen said.

There will be a contest for the best vampire costume, and Hansen is hoping that people turn out in their finest.

“There’s some who will go with the more romantic ‘Interview with a Vampire’ look, and others will do the Nosferatu look — that’s the creepier vampire, where he’s bald and has pointy ears and very long fingers,” she said.

While she admits that recent vampires, such as those of “Twilight” fame, are popular, she’s hoping most people turn towards more classic movies to inspire their look.

It’s also acceptable for people to arrive as “victims” of vampires, complete with bite marks, Hansen said.

The best costume award won’t be based just on looks, but also on staying in character. Hansen recalls being quite impressed with the “zombie king” who took first place at the Zombie Ball.

“He stayed in character the whole time, even when he came up and got this award he was limping and grunted,” she said.

Hansen estimates that a little more than 200 people showed up to the Zombie Ball.
She thinks even more will be drawn to the Vampire Ball because that particular undead creature has a broader appeal.

While the balls are fun, they’ve also been a business boon to Eric Williams, owner-operator of All Pro Pizza.

“It helps me with the business in this tough economy we have right now, and we’ve got to find new ways to bring in money,” he said.

Williams first let the club host a monthly horror movie night there, and when he saw that the members were a good bunch, he agreed to let them host the Zombie Ball.

“I think they’re great,” Williams said.
