Charlie Pollard went toa dance last weekend. She was battered and bloody, her hair was a mess — and she
was “dead” — but she had a great time. She was one of many “undead” who attended the Zombie Ball last Friday
night at Visalia’s All Pro Pizza.
The Zombie Ball was the first full-blown event sponsored by the Central Valley Horror Club, started by Kaci
Hansen. She got the idea for the Zombie Ball after hearing about zombie walks in larger cities.
“They have people dress up as zombies and walk around town,” she says. “They sounded likea lot of fun. We
don’t think dressing up should be just for Halloween.”
Hansen took the idea and let it decompose for a while in the back of her mind.
The horror club had been putting on free monthly movie nights for a while. It was time to try something new,
something bigger, bolder, bloodier— the Zombie Ball.
“It’s been a thing I’ve always wanted to do, but no one took me seriously,” she says. “I had no idea if people
would be into it or not.”
After spreading fliers around town and promoting it heavily on the Central Valley Horror Club’s MySpace page,
Hansen says she was overwhelmed by the response she received. The club had nearly 150 RSVPs and expected
more to just show up at the door. There were a lot of people who wanted to help out.
“Danny Gonzalez from Guitar Center of Visalia did all of the sound equipment,” Hansen says. “They offered to
do it and didn’t charge us anything for it, which was great, because we probably couldn’t afford it anyway.”
Prizes were donated and Hansen’s friend’s band, Letterhead, filled in at the last minute fora band that didn’t
show up.
Hansen isn’t sure of the final head count — especially since there were foam rubber heads there without bodies
to go along with them, as well as various other body parts.
“There’s really been nothing like this in Visalia ever,” says a zombie who identified himself as Deadboy. “We
need more things like this. It’s not every day you get to be a zombie.”
Witha DJ, three bands, the Horror Dolls dance troupe and a “Thriller” tribute, it was a pretty full evening. Central
Valley Horror Club has two similar events planned — Vampire’s Ball on Oct. 23 and Monster Mash on Oct. 30.
“Zombie Ball wasa test run to see how successful it would be,” Hansen says.
Judging by the number of blooddrenched ghouls and decomposed corpses that crawled out of the grave to
shake their zombified booties, the event was a big success
Yes, it is true. Visalia’s first VAMPIRE BALL will be hosted by Central Valley Horror Club on October 23rd, 2009.

Don’t act like you’re surprised
Also, the MONSTER MASH will take place on October 30th, 2009. More details to be revealed soon.

Aww, see? They're all dressed up and ready to see you at the Mooooonster Maaaaash!
As a sneak-preview, two possible bands that might be playing are GATJA and The Chamberlains.
If you thought the Zombie Ball was fun, wow…are you in for a treat at the Vampire Ball!!!
